An interesting comparison which immediately sprang to mind is Cranked, a mountain bike magazine which ran quarterly for 34 issues. Launched and piloted by Seb Rogers, a top MTB photographer and one-time judge of OWPG Photo Awards. It took the same approach of focusing on top quality writing and photography—and, as I can testify having done several pieces for it, it paid contributors properly as well as giving space for decently long-form pieces; ones I did were up to 5000 words. Cover price was high—I think it was £9 an issue at the end—but I always felt it was great value for money.
Oh yes, and they didn't do gear reviews.
I would think Seb would be a useful and interesting person for you to talk to and I can probably put you in touch if you like.
Thanks, Jon – great thoughts and I've certainly been inspired by Cranked, although I was never a reader myself. I'd love the opportunity to talk to Seb! If you were able to put me in touch, I'd be grateful – thank you (my inbox is shut down pre-Morocco now, but will revisit this when I get back!)
Good stuff Alex. Have been wrangling on here for a few years now, and have a good idea of some of the points you raise. Happy to chat if it’d be helpful.
William Morris, eh? Are you aware of his long-distance trek across Iceland? https://www.marxists.org/archive/morris/collected/The_collected_works_of_William_Morris_vol08.pdf
Very interesting! I was not aware of this. Something to add to my reading list...
Exciting plans! Looking forward to following this new adventure as it unfolds. So many things that tick so many of my boxes!
Really interested to see how this develops.

I'll drop him a line and check he's OK with my passing on his email address (or other contact).

Thanks – really appreciate that, and would love to take you up on it! I'll drop you a line when I get back from Morocco...
