Isolation and Connection | Pinnacle Newsletter #86
#86 Isolation and Connection
If you’ve been following my writing for a few years, you’ll know that I’m fascinated by ideas of isolation, solitude, and connection in an outdoors context. I have a free online talk coming up that will touch on these matters, and also a feature in the most recent issue of The Great Outdoors magazine.
My talk will take place on Sunday evening (28 March) at 18.30 GMT, and is part of the new Outside and Active Digital Festival (see the Sunday 28 March programme here). I’m joining Jenny Tough, an accomplished long-distance walker and fellow Sidetracked team member, in a joint live Q&A. After each of us talking a bit about ourselves and some of the trips we’ve done, there will be an opportunity to ask us questions, so please register your interest now – it’s free!
My TGO feature, ‘Isolation and Connection’, is out now in the Spring 2021 issue of the magazine. It’s about a very special backpacking trip I conducted back in December 2018, crossing Knoydart from south to north as a prelude to my winter Cape Wrath Trail a couple of months later. Perspectives on solitude and wildness, finding that ‘Knoydart glow’, broken bridge anxiety, and much more feature in this prelude to my upcoming Cape Wrath Trail book, The Farthest Shore. You can pick up a copy of the Spring issue here.
In other news…
I’m told that I can expect a draft cover design for The Farthest Shore within the next few weeks. Vertebrate Publishing have chosen a very talented illustrator to work with, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with. It’s getting real now!
I’m going to try to resume more regular Pinnacle Newsletters again – the kind of interesting stuff I used to write about, rather than just personal updates! Unfortunately I got out of the habit last year. Watch this space. I may consider moving to Substack (TinyLetter is fine, but it’s also quite limited).

In addition to the TGO feature mentioned above, the latest issue also includes the print version of my recent (and wildly popular) comment column, ‘Has outdoor culture become too detached from nature?’ The digital version is still available to read online here.
Recently I blogged about one year with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, a camera that has helped to revolutionise my photography over the last year.
Don’t forget that I publish a weekly ‘what I’ve been reading this week’ blog post containing links of note. You can catch up on these at alexroddie.com/blog.
Until next time,
Alex
